New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, was not quick to announce this decision promptly after his electoral win in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the need to directing all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda voters voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the best of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, it will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Political Debate

During his election campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his previous Astoria apartment.

Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
