When Beachgoers Fled Danger, Viral Photo Depicts Lifeguard Dashing ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the iconic coast as her personal space. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, noticed cracking sounds echoing through the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her home, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw signaled a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the avenue, conversing with a couple who had run up the incline soaked, she noticed someone approaching at her rear. This turned out to be a lifeguard, dashing in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. It was just him heading in the direction that the crowd was trying to escape from, while holding that sizeable pack and unshod … He moved towards something that surely every fibre in your being would tell you to run in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully full throttle running.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous acts of heroism in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, police and paramedics attending to many the injured.

Community Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the patrol base beside the location of the violence transforming into a makeshift hospital. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen helping out, such as entering the water to assist people needing help.

Following the attack, statements of appreciation flooded in. An online statement shared thanks for the lifeguards who showed that “compassion will always conquer evil”.

The squad of rescuers published a statement, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful words and support. We are overwhelmed by the compassion for our responders,” the team commented. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it helps those impacted.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many full-time beach safety officers, said that the team rose to the occasion from the second the incident started right into late that night.

“People have shared so many moving narratives, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” said a mayor.

“Our lifeguards show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous coastlines secure for the public, but what we observed on that day should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and grapple with the atrocity of this heinous act of violence, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much light we have seen in the midst of such evil.”
