Van Dijk Admits Squad Faces Crisis, Challenges Players on Responsibility
The Liverpool skipper has issued a scathing evaluation of Liverpool's woeful title defence, admitting the title holders are in disarray and failing manager Arne Slot while doubting whether every player is taking responsibility for the current downturn.
The Dutch defender struggled to hold back his anger after Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest, a result that left Liverpool in the lower section of the Premier League table with a negative goal difference. Tom Werner was in attendance to observe Liverpool’s latest loss in recent outings, their eighth setback in eleven fixtures across all competitions, and a display that fell apart against a Forest side that started the day in the relegation zone.
Poor Second Half and Defensive Lapses
The captain labeled Liverpool’s start to the second half as “not good enough” and admitted “anxiety set in” as soon as Murillo gave the visitors the lead. Forest’s opener was the ninth concession Liverpool have conceded from a set piece in the Premier League this season.
“We had a productive three or four days’ preparation but in a fixture you are dealing with facts and the facts are we conceded a free-kick in the first half and a poor concession at the start of the second half,” said the defender. “As a team, we're certainly letting him down, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. You look at yourself first and then you help each other, you work together to escape of this crisis because at the present time it is a difficult situation – that’s just a fact.
Captain’s Challenge: Step Up
Van Dijk usually speaks the media after a game as part of his role as Liverpool captain. This time was distinct, however. His voice was more forceful – audible enough that any teammate in the stadium corridors could listen in – and he expressed visible fury while urging the dressing room to respond. “Anger is justified,” he insisted. “The main thing for me is that each individual has to be accountable.” When questioned whether this is occurring, he answered: “It's unclear. But it's essential. It’s the main thing I expect the players to do. It's challenging during tough periods but we must act if we aim to recover of this.”
Summer Signings and Broader Issues
The Merseyside club spent almost £450m to replenish a title-winning squad in the off-season but have regressed, with new arrivals failing to make an impact so far. Van Dijk maintained that Liverpool’s issues extend past the recent additions. “It's difficult for all involved,” he said. “What I want is for everyone to be answerable on the field. This is necessary in order to motivate one another, to make each other better. If a teammate presses, you have to follow the press. These are fundamentals but it’s not happening enough.”
Appeal to Stick Together
The Dutchman continued: “In the current term we don’t have any steady form, we allow excessive scores, we are losing battles and all share the blame for it and I hope this is recognized. It's vital to take responsibility to turn this around and tempting to point fingers but you have to do it together. Past successes were collective and claimed the title and all contributed, and during a challenging phase you have to stick together and not point fingers.
“You have to be a man and face the toughness and persist, again and again because surrendering is not an option then you are at the wrong place in my view, because this club has been enduring many adversity over those years and we’ve consistently emerged of it. However, that doesn't imply it is straightforward, it’s exhausting but there is no other way.”
Next Fixtures
Next up in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next Sunday, after the midweek visit of PSV in the Champions League. Van Dijk commented: “Wednesday is another game so what am I going to do, dwell on the loss? No, I’m going to go home and analyze how we can improve results and hopefully that is the collective focus as well.”
