The distinctive yellow-fronted residential building in the background helped us locate the video.

We are verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures originated relied on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.

Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
