The Showrunner Reveals He Knows How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular program reaching its finale—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
