The Red Devils Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
