A group of six oddball but resilient kids confront the way of a vast and terrible otherworldly darkness that has infiltrated our realm from the farthest reaches of oblivion. They must spend their lifetimes battling it, experiencing terror upon terror in the struggle.

An Echoing Plot with a Fresh Spin

This is the plot, roughly, of Stephen King’s seminal work It (a standout in his career; undeniable). It parallels of Stephen King’s offspring Joseph Hillstrom King’s latest massive horror novel, in which six friends invoke the ancient, infinitely malicious dragon the Sorrowful Monarch from the Long Dark to help them defeat some baddies. Unsurprisingly, their supernatural ritual backfires.

Embracing a Family Heritage

The author started his career making great efforts to remain separate from his renowned parent, using the pseudonym he still uses today and steering clear of encounters with his agent (he bears a striking resemblance to his dad). But in this latest novel, he embraces it. Several quotes that consciously reflect some of King’s most famous (that classic opening line); a moment that evokes a recurring theme in King’s works (a battle of wits). Throughout this massive book, Hill is delighting in his family connection, and the audience revels alongside.

Introducing the Central Figures

Returning to the group: the majority are students at the fictional the esteemed institution in Maine. First is Arthur, bookish and gifted, deciphering Old English riddles in his spare time; Colin, wealthy, astute, and known for crushing those who oppose him; Donna and Donovan; the beautiful Allie. And there’s Gwen, who isn’t their classmate, but assumes a vital role of their band as they experiment, partly convinced, half not, in arcane arts.

The Pivotal Ceremony

Our hero becomes, for reasons we don’t need to go into, forced into stealing prized manuscripts from his beloved college library by a set of regional villains. This wounds his academic spirit, particularly as he’s made to take the collection’s foremost and unsettling publication: the diary of adept the historical figure (executed “for conspiring with dark forces in 1703”; the book’s jacket is made from his skin). These young investigators examine the log, discover they could summon what Crane describes as a clever snake to aid our hero with his blackmail problem – and devote the remaining story enduring the repercussions. King Sorrow will undoubtedly remove those problematic neighborhood criminals, but they’ll have to choose a new sacrifice every twelve months or become his victim themselves. As Arthur later puts it: “You sow dragon’s teeth, all you get is more dragons.”

Genre Versatility and Creative Range

Covering a generation, Hill also moves with natural fluency between genres: as the allies attempt to deal with the predicament they find themselves in by, in different ways, selecting clearly malevolent individuals to sacrifice, or seeking means to destroy the entity themselves, we go from thriller to dark fantasy, clandestine torment to love story to terror. A standout transition was to a heroic journey, within the subterranean depths beneath this UK region, a section tinged by JRR Tolkien that was gloriously terrifying.

A Rich Canvas of Dread and Hope

The novel features trolls – those living under bridges and internet antagonists, truly terrifying and expertly realized. The story includes mystic weapons and betrayals, heart-stopping scenes of bravery and scenes of appalling malevolence, both mortal and extraterrestrial. It’s a tour de force: a chilling book that is primarily a paean to the human inventiveness, and to affection and camaraderie. “We longed for a tale to embrace and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the friends assemble around a surface, preparing to summon their serpent into existence with the strength of their collective will.
