Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Educational Institution in Nigeria

Security breach at learning center
Learning centers in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for armed groups

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The armed faction breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, officials stated.

The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, according to a statement.

One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.

Local residents told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.

In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their children's secure homecoming.
