Realistically, they'd hope for an Ashes series in Australia where they remain in contention to reclaim the urn after the first three Tests.

This is not the case this time, though, after Australia's crushing triumph in Adelaide left the home side 3-0 up for the fourth straight contest on home turf.

The loyal traveling fans, England's supporters' group, have thousands of supporters making the journey for the last two matches in the SCG and MCG.

Furthermore, other organized trips who will celebrate the holidays overseas, as well as relatives and companions heading for a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

The Ryding Siblings

Four fans named Alex, Sam, Rory and Katie are four such fans.

Alex, Sam, Rory and Katie had their itineraries and entry credentials secured for the Boxing Day and New Year Tests "well ahead of time", hoping to witness a rare England series success.

Instead, they have watched Australia defeat England convincingly in just a short period from their house in their hometown.

"People in the office has been giving me grief regarding the concluded contest for the last two weeks," commented one sibling.

"The hope was that we would have the series on the line still when we got there."

Lowered Expectations

There was plenty of positivity regarding the team's prospects of breaking a 15-year drought for a victory down under ahead of the tour.

Yet now they are looking at the possibility of continuing a barren spell in the country to 19 matches when the Boxing Day Test begins in the MCG on Christmas Day.

Ben Stokes' side - and their followers - will be hoping to sidestep a whitewash.

One sibling noted the "thrill and enjoyment" of head coach the positive style of play in recent times had "brought fresh energy to" Test cricket for followers of the team.

Yet the fans said they had minimal hopes for the final two games - and all they are asking for from the players is "a show of spirit".

"Every pundit points it out, but it all is about fortitude. 'Bazball' has been become a phrase now that is just, like, unrealistic play," commented another sibling.

"Over the course of five days, you should apply yourself. Wafting outside 'sixth stump' areas has never featured in the coaching manuals, and that is largely because of the top order."

Future Prospects

Asked whether he believed England will secure a victory in the current series, Sam said: "It looks like the hosts are a stronger side at the moment."

"Necessarily, there must be several individuals that makes a significant contribution and produces a match-winning display."

Regardless of the result, the group remains looking forward to the trip.

"We will have a great time nonetheless," commented Katie Ryding. "We must adopt that outlook."

"Of course, it's a let-down we can't contest the series, but we have made a substantial financial commitment by now."

"We'll enjoy having Christmas and New Year in Australia. Additionally, it's our first experience away from home at this time of year."

A teacher, Katie is focused on enjoying the 21,000-mile round-trip as part of her time off.

"As a backup plan, I've got golf to rely on," she finished.
