New Year Revelers Told to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Expected Throughout the UK
Forecasters have indicated an icy start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Continue Amid Forecasts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are set to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," noted the Met Office.
Displays Under Open but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with no rain and open skies. Readings are expected to be low, meaning warm wraps a necessity, said forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Advisories for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Advisories Issued
At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this signified the weather was likely to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
