Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” he added. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
New York police released video stills Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
