Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be taken into custody and punished "by death" following their release of a disputed video.
The Message That Sparked the Dispute
The clip, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who formerly served in armed forces or security roles.
"As we did, you all took an pledge to safeguard and uphold this constitution," the representatives declared in the brief video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation are not only from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that contravene the law or our national charter."
Trump's Furious Reply
The video message reportedly trigger a furious reaction from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he stated: "This is really serious, and Dangerous to our United States. Their comments cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials React
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader released a unified statement censuring the remarks.
"Political violence has no place in the United States," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all served our nation with tremendous patriotism and excellence. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical social media posts and retract his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the statement added.
Representatives' Defiant Reaction
The officials who appeared in the video also released a statement.
"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who love this country and swore an vow to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we aim to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and duty to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "All citizens must come together and condemn the ex-president's requests for our death and political violence. This is a period for principled stance."
Additional Partisan Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of public representatives."
He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, every American – regardless of party – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very harmful, you have important representatives of the government advising military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in US history."
The GOP official also reportedly told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the offense of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and determine all that."
White House Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a media member, "Is the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson replied: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the spokesperson declared. "There are sitting members of the federal government who worked together to organize a video message to personnel of the national defense, to current military personnel urging them to ignore the president's legal commands."
She said: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can lead to fatalities, it can result in chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
