The nation's Interior Minister the interior minister has announced that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over allegations that he instigated "violent post-election demonstrations".

No fewer than 4 demonstrators have been lost their lives during confrontations between law enforcement and demonstrators since the electoral process on 12 October, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 winning an eighth consecutive term.

Tchiroma Bakary insists that he emerged victorious, a statement dismissed by the incumbent party, the CPDM.

Forceful measures by security personnel on protesters have worried the world leaders, with the UN, AU and European Union demanding restraint.

Minister's Accusations

On Tuesday, Nji alleged the opposition figure of planning what he labeled "unlawful" rallies leading to the fatalities, and also condemned him for declaring victory in the election.

He noted that the opposition leader's "associates behind an subversive plot" will also be prosecuted.

Vote Outcome

Cameroon's leader, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, obtained the October 12 vote with 53.7% of the ballots, compared to just over a third for his opponent, according to the electoral authority.

Challenger's Position

The opposition figure is has not yet commented to the authorities' move to bring him to court, but he had before announced that he refused to acknowledge a stolen vote - and that he was fearless of being detained.

On election result day, he reported that gunmen used lethal force on demonstrators gathered near his house in Garoua, causing the death of at least 2 people.

Inquiry Announced

Earlier this week, the interior minister disclosed that an investigation would be started into violent incidents before and after the publication of the poll figures.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the perpetrators died," he stated, without providing a specific number of demonstrators who have been killed in the clashes.

Nji added that multiple members of the law enforcement also suffered major harm.

Ongoing Circumstances

Although Nji insisted the situation nationwide was now manageable, demonstrators continue to protest in various areas of the country, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators mounted barricades on Tuesday, and set fire to tyres on the roads.

Analysts alert that the political turmoil could push the nation into a leadership vacuum.
